Daniel stood frozen on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n
The traffic kept moving.
\nPeople kept walking.
\nBut for him, the whole world had stopped.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you the man Mommy cries about at night?\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma shut her eyes for one painful second, like she had been dreading this moment for years.<\/p>\n

Daniel dropped to his knees in front of them, not caring about his suit, the wet pavement, or the people staring.<\/p>\n

He turned back to Emma, his voice shaking now.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were pregnant when you left?\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma let out a breath that sounded like it had been trapped in her chest for years.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t leave because I wanted to.\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel stared at her.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n
Tears filled her eyes instantly.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt means your mother came to me at the hospital the day after your accident,\u201d she said. \u201cShe told me you were being sent away for treatment\u2026 and that if I stayed, I would ruin your future. She gave me money to disappear.\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel went completely still.<\/p>\n
Emma looked down at the children.<\/p>\n
\u201cI threw the money away. I thought I could manage on my own. I couldn\u2019t.\u201d Her voice cracked. \u201cThen I heard you got engaged. I thought\u2026 I thought you had moved on.\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel shook his head like the words were physically hurting him.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d he whispered. \u201cI searched for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
The youngest child began crying from the cold.<\/p>\n
That sound shattered whatever control he had left.<\/p>\n
Daniel pulled off his coat immediately and wrapped it around all three children at once.<\/p>\n
His hands trembled as he tucked it around their shoulders.<\/p>\n
Then he looked at Emma with tears in his eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou should have told me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma gave a broken laugh through tears.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith what? Pride? Strength? I ran out of both.\u201d<\/p>\n
For a second they just looked at each other\u2014
\nyears of pain,
\nmisunderstanding,
\nlove,
\nbetrayal,
\nand loss standing there between them on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n
Then Daniel reached out slowly.<\/p>\n
Not to demand.
\nNot to accuse.<\/p>\n
Just to touch the cheek of the nearest child.<\/p>\n
The boy didn\u2019t pull away.<\/p>\n
Daniel\u2019s face crumpled.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are my children,\u201d he said, like he still couldn\u2019t believe he was hearing himself.<\/p>\n
Emma nodded once.<\/p>\n
Yes.<\/p>\n
A black car pulled up hard to the curb.<\/p>\n
Daniel\u2019s driver jumped out, startled by what he was seeing.<\/p>\n
But Daniel never looked away from Emma and the children.<\/p>\n
\u201cGet them in the car,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Emma stiffened immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said softly, but with finality. \u201cYou are not spending one more night on this street.\u201d<\/p>\n
The oldest child looked up at him with cautious hope.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you really coming with us?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
Daniel swallowed hard and placed one hand over the boy\u2019s head.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019ll let me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Emma started crying then\u2014really crying\u2014because for the first time in years, someone wasn\u2019t handing her pity.<\/p>\n
He was handing her a way back.<\/p>\n
And as Daniel helped the children into the car one by one, he took one last look at Emma and said the words that made her completely break:<\/p>\n
