The boy scrambled backward, clutching the photograph to his chest.
âI didnât steal it,â he said quickly. âItâs mine.â
The man lifted both hands, his voice breaking.
âI know.â
The boy stared at him through the fog.
âWho are you?â
The man looked down at Oliviaâs name, then back at the child.
âMy name is Henry.â
The boyâs lips trembled.
âMy mom used to say that name when she cried.â
Henry closed his eyes as pain moved through him.
For years, he had believed Olivia left him.
For years, he had let anger bury the love he never stopped feeling.
âWhatâs your name?â he whispered.
âEvan.â
Henry almost collapsed.
That was the name Olivia had chosen the night they talked about having a family.
Evan looked away.
âShe said if anything happened to her, I should find you. But your housekeeper said you didnât want me.â
Henryâs face went pale.
âMy housekeeper?â
Evan nodded, tears filling his eyes.
âShe gave me money and told me never to come back. I spent it on Momâs medicine.â
Henry covered his mouth.
His own staff had turned away his son.
His son had been sleeping on graves while he lived behind locked gates.
Evanâs voice cracked.
âI couldnât save her.â
Henry moved closer slowly.
âNo, Evan. You were a child.â
The boy shook his head hard.
âShe was cold. I put my coat on her. I said I was sorry because I didnât have enough money for the doctor.â
Henry broke.
He pulled the boy into his arms, and Evan fought it for one second, too used to being pushed away.
Then he collapsed against him.
âIâm sorry, Mom,â Evan sobbed again. âI found him too late.â
Henry held him tighter, tears falling onto the boyâs damp hair.
âNo,â he whispered. âShe sent you to me right on time.â
Behind them, the fog drifted across Oliviaâs grave.
Henry placed one hand on the marble stone and one around the son he never knew was alive.
âI failed your mother,â he said softly. âBut I will not fail you.â
Evan looked up at him with red, tired eyes.
âDo I have to sleep here tonight?â
Henryâs face crumpled.
He kissed the boyâs forehead and lifted him into his arms.
âNever again.â
